Let’s Get Floral & Fruity
Drinkspo (sorry) for our floral, fruity, rose hibiscus and sumac seasoning…
We’ve adored this blend since we came up with it, to be used as a glass rim seasoning (or rimmer, if you must).
It has sour smoky sumac, a spice made from dried ground berries from the sumac tree and is most commonly used in middle eastern food. We pulled on the middle eastern vibe with the addition of crushed dried rose petals for a floral lightness then added a fruity note with crushed dried red hibiscus flowers. All balanced with sugar, salt and a smidge of citric acid to give it that sherbet-y tang that makes you want to lick the entire circumference of the glass you’re drinking from. Uncouth, but unavoidable in my experience.
Though it’s divine, unusual and just utterly moreish and tends to convert anyone who actually tries it, it’s an outlier in terms of it’s obvious drinks pairings. People often ask us what type of drinks to serve with it so we’ve made this article as a reference point…
If you want exact recipes for these, google them but I’m a bit fan of following my intuition (what’s the worst that can happen!?). Please enjoy my incredibly realistic, highly professional creative imagining of what these lovely stock photos of cocktails would look like with our actual seasoning adorning them.
It’s also worth noting that for those not enamoured with it’s liquid pairings; it does work really well on a variety of puddings, cakes and fruits. Thanks to it’s natural red-pink ingredients as soon as it hit moisture it bleeds a beautiful pink colour. Use it on Eaton mess, pavlova, a raspberry roulade or just on some sorbet or ice cream as a garnish.
I love doing a lemon-raspberry loaf cake and sprinkling some on top at the end. I’ve also done a white chocolate cookie with a little on top which looks very pretty. The simplest thing you can probably eat it with is on a fruit salad though. The slight saltiness cuts through acidic, sweet fruit and gives it a grown up lift. Give it a go on nectarines, pineapple, mango, kiwis, apples and nectarines.
Or…like our favourite food writer, Nic Miller says… eat it like it is actually sherbet!
“I love Pinches blends so much I eat them straight from the container as if they were a Sherbet Dib-Dab. I simply cannot be trusted around the sumac-rose-hibiscus glass rim seasoning!”
Anyway. All that typing has made me thirsty. I’m off to neck a soju spritz and lick the entire circumference of my glass in one sweep of the tongue. Thankfully, I’m not entertaining tonight so no one need bear witness.
